Welcome America - two new interns at AutoCom

Hi everyone,

We – Marie and Florian – are the new interns at AutoCom. We both arrived at the end of February to have some time to organize stuff and to settle in. We both live in Royal Oak in a shared flat for the next six months, where nearly all the other interns from different companies are living.


I am Marie and I just finished my master studies in economics at the University of Cologne in Germany. It is my second time living in the U.S.  for half a year. In 2012, I went to San Diego to do a semester abroad. It was fantastic. But as I am experiencing now, you cannot compare California and Michigan. These are totally different states.

I arrived on Tuesday night at Detroit Metro Airport, where Nicole picked me up. Right the next morning, it started snowing for two days. Nevertheless, I went out to explore my neighborhood and did a walk to Royal Oak downtown. It was freezing cold, so I made a stop in a cute café to have a late breakfast.

Believe it or not, the sun was shining on the weekend and all the snow was gone – we had spring feelings. People told me that the weather could totally change from one day to the other. You know what, it snowed again this week and the traffic was disturbed again. Thank God, we have a car and sit in a warm office.
I am here for nearly two weeks now and I already feel like this is my home. On the weekend there will be my first trip around here – Chicago is calling. I am really looking forward to visiting this city. Everyone said it should look a bit like New York, so we will see. I will tell you in my next blog post.



My first morning in Michigan
My name is Florian and I am currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business administration at the University of Applied Sciences in Regensburg.

Since I arrived we had some nice days but also quite a few snowy ones. On my second evening, the city of Royal Oak even proclaimed the snow emergency. This means that every car has to be parked off the street. It was quite a hassle moving all our cars and my rental car to the park behind our house. Additionally on the first day of work we were allowed to leave early due to sleet and heavy snow. Other than that Michigan did a good job in welcoming its new citizen. I’m slowly getting used to the traffic and its laws and rules like being allowed to turn right at a red light and passing to the right on the freeway. The most difficult for me is remembering that there is no “left yields to right” rule on intersections but instead who comes first has right of way.

I live in a five bedroom house in Royal Oak with currently four rooms occupied. My roommates welcomed me very kindly and took me to another house on my second evening, where I met Marie, the other intern who started on March 1st and a lot of other people. Additionally I got to know Nicole, the current intern at AutoCom who we are carpooling with. Since then Marie showed me her new favorite coffee place called Atomic Coffee right in downtown Royal Oak, which has really good coffee with a free refill.
Let’s see what the next weeks will bring but hopefully the weather will be nicer.

I won’t be an intern anymore. :)

Hi everybody! There is news again from my life. You know, I am a person who never stops doing something. Either I travel almost every weekend (like I did in the States) or I am looking for new challenges all the time. :-) Well, my internship in Munich as a marketing consulting intern is not too bad, but I have finished University…so what I want is a real job and not an internship. (The only internship I would love to do, even after I graduated, is the one I already did with AutoCom). :) So I continued applying for jobs. I restricted the area to Bavaria for the first applications, because I love that part of Germany. I love the Bavarian dialect (it is so cute and sexy the same time). I love their “Brezn” and their white sausages. And here is the news: I will start on the 26th of November as an employee at Novartis. Novartis is a huge German pharmaceutical company. I will work there for the strategic sourcing marketing. So I will be the one choosing agencies, advertising materials and so...

Hi everyone, My name is Sarah Heuser. I’m 23 years old and from a small town near Cologne, Germany. I just finished my master’s in Journalism and Corporate Communications at the University of Applied Sciences in Wuerzburg. Even though I have a bachelor’s degree in Media and American Studies, I have never been to the US before. That’s why I really wanted to do an internship here so I could see what life and work is like. Rebecca and Julian, the other AutoCom interns, picked me up from the airport last Saturday and my new roommates and some of their friends were already waiting for me.
