Welcome to Detroit!

Hey everyone,

My name is Eva and I will be an intern at AutoCom for the next six month. My first day at AutoCom was on September 11th and with that I had a few days since I started my internship to settle in and get familiar with everything.

Originally, I am from a small village in Bavaria and I am currently pursuing my bachelor double degree in European Business at the Technical University of Applied Science in Regensburg, Germany. I spent the last year studying at the Oxford Brookes University in the UK. So after a year in the UK, I decided that an internship in the US would be the perfect match for me.

As many former interns of AutoCom, I am living in a shared house in Royal Oak with two others. One of my flat mates kindly picked me up from the airport, even though we’ve never met before. After taking me home to our house she took me to downtown Detroit to show me around as well as to pick up some food for dinner after my long trip.

It’s been over two weeks since I left Germany for the next half year. But within this weeks in Metro Detroit Area I was able to get settled in, get my newly purchased car registered, get a bank account as well as get an American phone number. Moreover, I was able to experience lots of new things, meet new people and get more familiar with the American culture.

Furthermore, I experienced that having a car here is definitely a plus. In my first three days here in the US, until I was able to register my car, I experienced how important it is to own a car. I tried to walk as much as possible and a 30 minute walk to the next bigger store is doable, but is nothing for the everyday life. With having the car registered, I was able to experience way more than just small stores nearby my house but also to get to bigger stores like Target or Walmart to fill not only the fridge but also to collect more experiences.

Within my first weekend, I was able to go to my first American farmers market in Royal Oak. Which was not only selling local fruits and vegetables but also many other local produced products. You totally can go there hungry and not leave hungry. There was a small coffee place, which satisfied the coffee cravings in the morning but also some small bakeries which sold bread, donuts and many other yummy smelling pastries.

My first weeks at AutoCom passed by so quickly, but I already can tell that I will like it. Everyone was helping me to settle in, to get to know my task field, as well as explaining lots of new things, not only about the work but also about where to go and what to do around in this area of the United States. I am looking forward to the upcoming time here at AutoCom!

About Cologne, Cars and Trees… - Update from the other Side of the Lake

Hi or as we would say in Franconia "Servus", a couple of months have passed since I started my internship at AutoCom and even though I cannot share something about the amazing sites within and around Detroit, I can still give you an update on what is happening.  Philipp has joined us two months ago and we two are currently working on the Social Media Appearance of AutoCom. Even as "digital nomads" we encounter challenges and still have a lot to learn. However, it is great just to create new things from scratch or nearly immediately see a result when sharing a story or creating a post.  But enough of work… About Cologne Larry and the others offered me to go to Cologne to attend a meeting with a client and I - of course - couldn't resist and decided to stay even a bit longer. It was a nice trip with splendid late summer weather and I was able to take a lot of images - at least until my battery died.  About cars Since some of my initial projects were crushed by th...

I won’t be an intern anymore. :)

Hi everybody! There is news again from my life. You know, I am a person who never stops doing something. Either I travel almost every weekend (like I did in the States) or I am looking for new challenges all the time. :-) Well, my internship in Munich as a marketing consulting intern is not too bad, but I have finished University…so what I want is a real job and not an internship. (The only internship I would love to do, even after I graduated, is the one I already did with AutoCom). :) So I continued applying for jobs. I restricted the area to Bavaria for the first applications, because I love that part of Germany. I love the Bavarian dialect (it is so cute and sexy the same time). I love their “Brezn” and their white sausages. And here is the news: I will start on the 26th of November as an employee at Novartis. Novartis is a huge German pharmaceutical company. I will work there for the strategic sourcing marketing. So I will be the one choosing agencies, advertising materials and so...
Hi everyone, My name is Sarah Heuser. I’m 23 years old and from a small town near Cologne, Germany. I just finished my master’s in Journalism and Corporate Communications at the University of Applied Sciences in Wuerzburg. Even though I have a bachelor’s degree in Media and American Studies, I have never been to the US before. That’s why I really wanted to do an internship here so I could see what life and work is like. Rebecca and Julian, the other AutoCom interns, picked me up from the airport last Saturday and my new roommates and some of their friends were already waiting for me. We are all living in Royal Oak, but I’m in a different house than the other AutoCom interns. They are currently taking me to work as I am still figuring out details regarding my car. Last week, which was also my first week at work, was the 4 th of July holiday. That’s why I joined Rebecca, Julian and other interns on a trip to New York. We drove over ten hours but it was worth it: the city is impr...
