Goodbye Germany! Hello Detroit!

Hi there,
I am Sophia – AutoComs’ new intern. I am an undergraduate student of International Business from Aalen, Germany and I will support the team for six months. I am looking forward to have an instructive time and to make many remarkable experiences in the field of public relations and event management.
After I had said goodbye to my family and friends, I sat in the airplane - ready to take off and full of expectations, ideas, but also fears as well as excitement about the greatest adventure of my life.  When I arrived in the States, Niko picked me up from the airport and helped me to do my first steps into the American lifestyle.
My first night I spent in an only girls-house of my landlord, where I met two girls, which I already proudly call friends. We have already set up two traditions: going out for tacos on taco-tuesday and treating ourselves with a frozen-yoghurt on Fridays. Actually we are more into the delicious toppings than into the fro-yo… J
Due to space-problems I unfortunately had to move out in a shared housing nearby, where I am the only girl among 4 boys… We all know that usually boys have a different understanding of hygiene and the necessity of cleaning than girls have… However, I will just stay there for two more weeks, and then I am going to move back and will live together with native speaking girls, which will be an amazing opportunity to improve my English.

Since I arrived in Detroit two weeks ago, I had lots of things to organize. The first challenge was to buy a car on my own and to get used to the overwhelming traffic of the Motor city. During the first few days I was even quite afraid, whether I would find my way home through all those “Michigan u-turns”. Just as I felt more confident driving, another unexpected issue regarding my visa popped up and I had to travel back to the Detroit airport. After an one hour desponding car ride and another hour spent looking for the right office I finally met an officer who was able to help me.
The next challenge, which came up out of the clear sky, was that somebody had bumped into my car at the office parking lot. Fortunately, the lady left me her number and seems to be willing to pay for the damage. Nevertheless, it will be tricky to handle the matter, I will at least learn to do in the American way and practice my English.
During my first weeks at the office, I have already learned a lot about the daily routine of an agency and our clients. I set up my internship objectives and I am dedicated to try and achieve them. Furthermore I have written my first release draft, assisted in sending out releases and have attended team meetings. It seems to me that I will learn quite a lot in the next six month and I am looking forward to that. J

This upcoming weekend the traditional Woodward Dream Cruise will take place. During the last days we could already recognize many different unique cars on our way home. On the one hand we were able to see cars which were brand new and fancy and on the other hand, ones were able to see restored classic vehicles. I will attend this event this evening with some friends, which will be interesting and enjoyable. I will spend the rest of my weekend in Chicago and I am really excited! I will take many pictures and keep you updated!

Tara, Earl of Drunwitch

The common stereotypes against British people are: - they always drink tea & eat Fish&Chips - on vacations they always get sunburned, because the sun never shines in England - their humor is dry and sometimes a little bit strange. After a few weeks with our intern Graham from Swansea I don't agree with any of these stereotypes. I now believe that British people always drink energy drinks with strange pictures on it, they can never get sunburned because they are always wearing nice "whistles" and big American hats and their humor is everything but strange... To be honest... German humor, which means Nicky's and my humor ("The funny German girls" ©) is nearly the same...! To score some brownie points at the beginning of his time at AutoCom he brought the new Aquada to the office. And who wants David Hasselhoff and K.I.T.T. when you can have the Earl of Drunwitch and the Aquada? A nice sport car and you only have to push one button and it will be bo...

Time to say Goodbye

Only two days left until Don Haberek will leave the AutoCom Team. He was our COO, interns supervisor and the best cake cutter ever! He always had time for the intern's issues and was listening very patiently and carefully to us. Even if he had to repeat his advice a billion times for the foreign interns! But he wasn't only a great interns supervisor. He also gave everbody the oppotunity to gain some weight, when he was cutting perfectly our (nearly weekly ;-)) cake. We really hope, we will find somebody who has the same great technic to cut a cake: 1) Be very gentle to the cake! 2) Use a very sharpe-edged knife, especially our chocolate junky Mareike doesn't want to waste a bit! 3) Be sure that you cut enough pieces. But we think we allready have a new cake cutter. After a long long time Don finally found his twin brother. And accidentally he is working for AutoCom aswell. :-) Who is dressing like Don, must have the same skills! Thanks for everything, we wi ll miss having...

I won’t be an intern anymore. :)

Hi everybody! There is news again from my life. You know, I am a person who never stops doing something. Either I travel almost every weekend (like I did in the States) or I am looking for new challenges all the time. :-) Well, my internship in Munich as a marketing consulting intern is not too bad, but I have finished University…so what I want is a real job and not an internship. (The only internship I would love to do, even after I graduated, is the one I already did with AutoCom). :) So I continued applying for jobs. I restricted the area to Bavaria for the first applications, because I love that part of Germany. I love the Bavarian dialect (it is so cute and sexy the same time). I love their “Brezn” and their white sausages. And here is the news: I will start on the 26th of November as an employee at Novartis. Novartis is a huge German pharmaceutical company. I will work there for the strategic sourcing marketing. So I will be the one choosing agencies, advertising materials and so...
