“Welcome To Michigan” - The Jump Into Winter Experience

Two more weeks have past and right now I am in my fifth week in the USA. Meanwhile I got used to the daily American life, so far many things are already quite normal for me, which have been very overwhelming in the beginning.
Now I am feeling comfortable in stores with all the grandmas and grandpas sitting and cruising around with small electrical caddys through the widths of Walmart. When I hear a beep in the store, I know that it might be a granny backing up around the corner. I am always prepared for a caddy crash ;-)
Another thing is: cars and trucks in a bad condition wouldn’t have a chance to get a wheel on roads in Germany. In the U.S. it is not a problem driving a car which is falling to pieces. I pass those cars everyday but still with an uneasy feeling right next to them.
On the other hand there are many luxury cars and pickups, more than twice as high as my car, glaring at me through my rear window with their headlights on every traffic light :-D. I think I should get some sunglasses even if it’s winter.

Winter impressions in Royal Oak

Are you thirsty?
Yes, you read correctly, the winter started already in Michigan. One day we had a beautiful fall and the next morning there we had -10 degree Celsius and snow – in the middle of November. Even the bottle of water in my car was absolutely frozen. I heard on the radio today that this is the coldest November we had in Metro-Detroit since 1880.

Even though winter began I am having a good time with my friends. One awesome experience we had was in downtown Detroit when we went out for dinner. We went to a restaurant recommended by some locals and the waiter gave us a five minute how-to-dine-in-this-restaurant briefing.. I must admit, I quit listening after a few minutes – because I was sooo hungry – but listened again to the most important part, I guess, when he was talking about the green-red card in front of each. It was a signal for the waiters: green means “more meat”, red means “no, thank you”.

Next to an extraordinary buffet with cold dining, a range of waiters were swarming through the restaurant and offering each table huge spits with different kinds of delicious meat. Stopping at a table, they started cutting some slices of meat for you. The variety started from house special beefsteaks, pork filets, lamb, to bacon wrapped chicken and so on… all in all sixteen different prepared kinds of meat. It was like heaven on earth!
One more unforgettable experience was my first visit to an American cinema. It was the most relaxing experience ever: adjustable leather seats, enormous space in front of you and broad armrests (no fights with your neighbor to settle your arm down ;-))  – I thought this is like first class in an airplane, with the difference that the screen in front of you is much bigger. We have been watching the movie “Interstellar” - I recommend it to you!

Another two weeks of my internship in America have passed, but this is just the beginning of the exciting stories I will keep you posted on.

About Cologne, Cars and Trees… - Update from the other Side of the Lake

Hi or as we would say in Franconia "Servus", a couple of months have passed since I started my internship at AutoCom and even though I cannot share something about the amazing sites within and around Detroit, I can still give you an update on what is happening.  Philipp has joined us two months ago and we two are currently working on the Social Media Appearance of AutoCom. Even as "digital nomads" we encounter challenges and still have a lot to learn. However, it is great just to create new things from scratch or nearly immediately see a result when sharing a story or creating a post.  But enough of work… About Cologne Larry and the others offered me to go to Cologne to attend a meeting with a client and I - of course - couldn't resist and decided to stay even a bit longer. It was a nice trip with splendid late summer weather and I was able to take a lot of images - at least until my battery died.  About cars Since some of my initial projects were crushed by th...

A New Year, a New Intern

Hi everybody, My name is Véronique and I am happy to say that I will be one of the new interns at AutoCom beginning on March 19. I am a 21 year old student from Germany. The internship is part of my International Business & Management degree that I am working on at the Hanze University in Groningen, Netherlands. I am currently in my third year at Hanze University and the previous semester I studied abroad at a partner university in Macau, China, where I took courses related to my marketing major. I am very excited to start my second stay abroad in a few weeks and I hope that I will gain a lot of professional experience and get to know the area of public relations while working at AutoCom. I also love traveling, so I hope I will be able to see as much of the U.S. as possible, especially since it is my first stay there. It has always been a dream of mine to visit the U.S. and now being able to learn the entire culture and industry by actually living there is a huge bonus. Right now I...

It feels good to be home!

After completing my third year at Northern Michigan University in the Upper Peninsula, it feels good to be back home and in the office again. Larry was very gracious in allowing me to come back to AutoCom. For those of you that do not know me, my name is Tedi Falvo. Last summer I did an internship with AutoCom, and learned a lot about public relations outside of the classroom. Books can only teach you so much- the real learning comes when you go out on your own and put everything you have learned to the test. Last summer was a great experience, and I was thankful to work with such a great staff that was willing to help me succeed. While I was in Marquette, Mich. continuing my studies in public relations, and sociology, I remained in contact with AutoCom. When I had a question regarding an aspect of my studies, I always knew where to turn! It is nice to have wonderful people surrounding and filling you with all of their knowledge. That is one aspect I love about working here-everyone wo...
