Downtown, Football and Halloween

Hi guys, this is Martin again..
Time is running by so fast – it is my third week at AutoCom. A lot of exciting things happened in the meantime. Find some of my most interesting experiences below.
Wednesday, October 22nd, was an awesome day: After a couple of days looking around for a car, I was finally successful and bought a 2002 Taunus with comparatively few miles. Now I am happy to be more flexible. I am proud to drive my car with the Michigan plate on a cruise where and whenever I like to.
The next event on Wednesday was the Oktoberfest: The Detroit Press Club celebrated their Oktoberfest at Jacoby’s Biergarten, downtown. AutoCom and two of our clients sponsored the band, so Merle and I attended the celebrations as AutoCom representatives.
It was fun to be there and I never would have guessed to drink some German beer so close to my arrival ;) This was my first time in downtown Detroit and from now on all the prejudices were reduced since I had been driving through the city in the evening, watching the lighted skyscrapers.

The next great experience was the football party at Larry’s house on Saturday 24th. Larry and his wife Kathi invited us to their annual tailgate party for the college football derby University of Michigan vs. Michigan State.
Shortly after I arrived, Larry gave me a Michigan-shirt to support the Michigan team dressed perfectly. Next to delicious jalapeño poppers, stuffed with cheese and wrapped in smoked bacon, we had extraordinary margaritas and everything else one could wish for. After an awesome afternoon with many interesting conversations and great company, unfortunately even my shirt change couldn’t hamper the defeat of the Michigan team in the evening.

Sunday was the perfect day to further explore downtown Detroit by day – I still had the first impressions from Wednesday evening in my mind. My plan was to see the city step by step, in order to take in all the new impressions. Therefore I decided to visit Belle Isle, an island lain in the Detroit river next to the Canadian border, where I enjoyed a glorious view of Detroit’s buildings.

After relaxing on top of one of the rocks near the water, I made my way closer to downtown and entered the Renaissance Center. After a short visit I enjoyed the last sunny moments near the Detroit Riverwalk.

Last week seemed to be very stressful – Halloween was around the corner!
Until Tuesday I didn’t get any outstanding ideas for dressing me up. I always wanted to find something scary until my American guys told me, this is not a must have. Halloween is moreover a mix of scary things and carnival in Germany. Nevertheless – this did not make my decision easier.

Still it was not that easy to find a costume, even at Halloween, when all the stores are full with masks, accessories and costumes – you bet! After two attempts with my housemates, everyone finally found his or her costume and was prepared for our unforgettable Halloween party. I was dressed up as wannabe gangster or rapper, wearing golden chains, huge sunglasses and a big inflated ghetto blaster – we had a lot of fun :D.

Delicious Korean food
To sum up this brilliant week, my housemates and I decided to have a Korean dinner. One of them is from Korea and presented us his favorite Korean restaurant in the north of Detroit. We were happy to have him with us, because he organized a perfect culinary journey through the variety of Korean food.
Now I am absolutely keen in this restaurant, with the grills embedded in each table. Also Korean food has become one of my favorite meals.

Two weeks with unforgettable experiences have past and I am sure I will have similar stories for you during the next two weeks. I am looking forward to it and will keep you posted on my American journey.

Time to say Goodbye

Only two days left until Don Haberek will leave the AutoCom Team. He was our COO, interns supervisor and the best cake cutter ever! He always had time for the intern's issues and was listening very patiently and carefully to us. Even if he had to repeat his advice a billion times for the foreign interns! But he wasn't only a great interns supervisor. He also gave everbody the oppotunity to gain some weight, when he was cutting perfectly our (nearly weekly ;-)) cake. We really hope, we will find somebody who has the same great technic to cut a cake: 1) Be very gentle to the cake! 2) Use a very sharpe-edged knife, especially our chocolate junky Mareike doesn't want to waste a bit! 3) Be sure that you cut enough pieces. But we think we allready have a new cake cutter. After a long long time Don finally found his twin brother. And accidentally he is working for AutoCom aswell. :-) Who is dressing like Don, must have the same skills! Thanks for everything, we wi ll miss having...

I won’t be an intern anymore. :)

Hi everybody! There is news again from my life. You know, I am a person who never stops doing something. Either I travel almost every weekend (like I did in the States) or I am looking for new challenges all the time. :-) Well, my internship in Munich as a marketing consulting intern is not too bad, but I have finished University…so what I want is a real job and not an internship. (The only internship I would love to do, even after I graduated, is the one I already did with AutoCom). :) So I continued applying for jobs. I restricted the area to Bavaria for the first applications, because I love that part of Germany. I love the Bavarian dialect (it is so cute and sexy the same time). I love their “Brezn” and their white sausages. And here is the news: I will start on the 26th of November as an employee at Novartis. Novartis is a huge German pharmaceutical company. I will work there for the strategic sourcing marketing. So I will be the one choosing agencies, advertising materials and so...

Traverse City 2009

Squeezed in a Jeep between dozens of boxes filled with flash-drives, key chains, pens and pencils, part of our staff headed to Northern Michigan last week for the annual Management Briefing Seminars (MBS). The MBS is one of the highlights in the automotive events calendar with the “who’s who” attending from the global auto industry. It has become tradition over the years that AutoCom hosts several special events for its clients during that week. This year’s AutoCom team was Larry, Jim, Craig, Jack, Tedi, Eleanor and me. Arriving in Traverse City on Monday afternoon, we started decorating the suite that AutoCom rents during that time at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa. The suite was open from 7am until 9pm, Monday until Friday, and provided a place for our clients as well as for journalists to work and relax in a nice and quiet atmosphere. To say that Eleanor, Tedi and I weren’t exactly dressed in business clothes would be an understatement. Somehow we had a different schedule in mind...
