Time to say Goodbye...

I can’t believe that five months have already passed since I began my internship at AutoCom Associates.

I was so excited about the people that I would meet, the work experience I would gain, and especially, the insights I would accumulate about the American culture.

I learned a lot in my time at AutoCom Associates and I met extremely nice individuals. I especially recall the fun that I had while sharing an office with my coworker, Emily. She was my age and we shared a lot of laughs. Overall I learned that it is important to have fun, but don’t lose sight of your obligations at work. I think Emily and I quickly developed a good balance between work and play.

Emily taught me a lot about the American lifestyle and helped me to improve my language skills. Sometimes she found it hard to explain words but she was persistent, and I eventually got the hang of it. It was funny that she couldn’t always believe I didn’t know some of the ‘slang’ words. But we joke because I know she would be in my shoes in Germany ;)

Thank you for your help, Emily ;)

Denise was also wonderful to work with. I found her to be a motherly figure to us interns, always bringing warm sunshine into the office, even if it was really cold outside this winter. I particularly enjoyed the breakfast bagels she brought into the office regularly!  Yummyy…. Thank you Denise.

Many thanks to Austin, as well. He was always a wonderful coworker and supervisor. He took time to thoroughly explain the public relations aspect of business and he also taught me a lot about the American culture. I came to find there are a lot of differences between the German and American cultures…the differences taking both Austin and Emily a little by surprise, too.

When I asked what Americans think about Germans, Austin gave me the perfect and funniest answer I’ve ever heard. He described us German interns as “soft” … I can’t stop thinking and laughing about that. Thanks for that, Austin.

And when I’m back in Germany and I wake up on Friday mornings, I will probably still hear Craig’s voice in my head asking, “How was the thirsty Thursday?” When I heard that I always knew that it must officially be Friday!

In addition to all the good times, I found a love for the American way of dining …. Those delicious hamburger sliders from Hunter House Hamburgers, which Craig brought, have a special place in my heart.

...Which reminds me of our lunch meetings with Jack at AutoCom. I enjoyed those meetings. He taught us so much about the public relation craft and did a really good job making us feel welcome. Thank you, Jack.

Last but not least, thank you Larry for allowing me this experience in the office and in the United States!!! This stint in America has been truly meaningful and I anticipate returning to Germany with a better understanding of my career direction, a big weight off of my shoulders. Interning at your company has proven to be an invaluable stage in my personal and career development.

I will miss everyone but anticipate staying in touch.

Christina

About Cologne, Cars and Trees… - Update from the other Side of the Lake

Hi or as we would say in Franconia "Servus", a couple of months have passed since I started my internship at AutoCom and even though I cannot share something about the amazing sites within and around Detroit, I can still give you an update on what is happening.  Philipp has joined us two months ago and we two are currently working on the Social Media Appearance of AutoCom. Even as "digital nomads" we encounter challenges and still have a lot to learn. However, it is great just to create new things from scratch or nearly immediately see a result when sharing a story or creating a post.  But enough of work… About Cologne Larry and the others offered me to go to Cologne to attend a meeting with a client and I - of course - couldn't resist and decided to stay even a bit longer. It was a nice trip with splendid late summer weather and I was able to take a lot of images - at least until my battery died.  About cars Since some of my initial projects were crushed by th...

I won’t be an intern anymore. :)

Hi everybody! There is news again from my life. You know, I am a person who never stops doing something. Either I travel almost every weekend (like I did in the States) or I am looking for new challenges all the time. :-) Well, my internship in Munich as a marketing consulting intern is not too bad, but I have finished University…so what I want is a real job and not an internship. (The only internship I would love to do, even after I graduated, is the one I already did with AutoCom). :) So I continued applying for jobs. I restricted the area to Bavaria for the first applications, because I love that part of Germany. I love the Bavarian dialect (it is so cute and sexy the same time). I love their “Brezn” and their white sausages. And here is the news: I will start on the 26th of November as an employee at Novartis. Novartis is a huge German pharmaceutical company. I will work there for the strategic sourcing marketing. So I will be the one choosing agencies, advertising materials and so...
Hi everyone, My name is Sarah Heuser. I’m 23 years old and from a small town near Cologne, Germany. I just finished my master’s in Journalism and Corporate Communications at the University of Applied Sciences in Wuerzburg. Even though I have a bachelor’s degree in Media and American Studies, I have never been to the US before. That’s why I really wanted to do an internship here so I could see what life and work is like. Rebecca and Julian, the other AutoCom interns, picked me up from the airport last Saturday and my new roommates and some of their friends were already waiting for me. We are all living in Royal Oak, but I’m in a different house than the other AutoCom interns. They are currently taking me to work as I am still figuring out details regarding my car. Last week, which was also my first week at work, was the 4 th of July holiday. That’s why I joined Rebecca, Julian and other interns on a trip to New York. We drove over ten hours but it was worth it: the city is impr...
