Kansas, why are you going to Kansas? That was a common question I heard the last couple of days before the long weekend. The reason was the long Thanksgiving weekend. That is one of the holidays which is absolutely a new experience as a German intern in the USA. However, I am really glad that I had the opportunity to celebrate Thanksgiving, which is a national holiday always celebrated on the 4th Thursday of November in order to give thanks, with an American family in Kansas. Some try to compare it to the German “Erntedankfest” but after this weekend I can definitely say that it is definitely not comparable.
Being together with family members, talking and of course eating typical
Thanksgiving food like Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes with optional gravy,
sweet corn and of course cranberry sauce as well as various types of
vegetables, gives the sense of unity. Even I really felt at home and like a
part of the family. And of course you can’t forget the variety of traditional
pies as well.
After that unforgettable
Thanksgiving on Thursday the family took me out on Friday to get to know the
traditional of going “Christmas Tree Cutting.” This means nothing other than families going to
Christmas tree farms to cut down and put a tree in their homes as a part of
their holiday celebration in December. For me it’s kind of early but I had a
lot of fun setting up my first Christmas tree before December has even begun.
After that going out and eating a “small”
pizza was a really nice end of the day.
And to finish-up my American holiday
weekend, on Saturday I went to a college football game. The game took place at Kansas Memorial Stadium, located in Lawrence,
Kansas, where the hometown Kansas
Jayhawks played against the Kansas
State Wildcats . A “derby” which started with tailgating and ended with an exciting game that
resulted with a victory for the Kansas State Wildcats (10-31).
So coming back to the initial
question of why I would go to Kansas- to experience a wonderful American
Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
